Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization

Wealthy Territory I prints 5 resources but the intended value is 6publisher
- RULING
- "The reason is we considered both values when developing the board game. However, the app was already in development when we were finalizing data for print, and somehow it happened the values ended up different in both versions. We noticed that relatively late during the digital version playtesting, and decided to keep 6 because it feels better. When doing board game expansion, we will probably include updated 'Wealthy Territory I' there."

- RULING
- A war card that has been resolved goes to the military discard pile of its age, not out of the game. If that age's military deck runs out, the discard pile is shuffled to form a new deck, so a resolved war card can be drawn again. The rulebook's "remove from play" wording on page 9 conflicts with the player aid, which says "discard"; the player aid is the wording to follow.

Spending a military action as a civil action with Hammurabidesigner
- CONTEXT
- Players asked whether Hammurabi's ability may be used while civil actions are still available, and what happens to the refunded action when Hammurabi himself is replaced.
- RULING
- "Technically, you can use a red token even if you have white tokens available. But practically, I think there is only one reasonable situation where it matters — when replacing Hammurabi with another leader. In that case, you get one civil action back even if you used a red action, but only if you have spent at least one civil action before doing that."
Charlie Chaplin doubles exactly one theaterpublisher
- CONTEXT
- A player built three Movies and asked whether Chaplin's "Your best theater produces twice as much culture" doubled the output of all of them.
- RULING
- "It's just one theater, it would say 'all your best theaters' otherwise."

- CONTEXT
- A player thought the digital game was awarding the defender's bonus to a player who had declared the war themselves.
- RULING
- "Your unit is 'attacking' if you were the one who declared the war or aggression. If it was the other player who played the card, your unit is 'defending'. When you play an aggression, you declare which unit you are sacrificing, if any. […] Your unit is sacrificed even if the aggression is unsuccessful. By contrast, when defending against an aggression, you know whether the sacrifice will be enough. In a war, you don't decide whether to sacrifice until the war is being evaluated. Sacrificing works the same way here as it does during colonization — the yellow token representing the sacrificed unit goes to your yellow bank and not to your worker pool."

- CONTEXT
- Asked how strength ties are broken when several players share the same rating; the usual tie-breaker has an exception that is easy to miss.
- RULING
- "If the card requires players to compare a statistic, ties are resolved this way: the current player, or the player who is closer to the current player in clockwise order, is considered to have the higher value. […] If an event is evaluated at the end of the game, the starting player is considered to be the current player when breaking ties. But if the card applies to 'all civilizations' with the most or least of something (as in Immigration) then any ties remain unbroken." In practice this means the player who seeds an event wins its ties, except on "all civilizations" cards.

- CONTEXT
- Asked whether the wonder's "one of your best mines produces twice as many resources" applies to the immediate production forced by the Economic Progress event, not just to the Production Phase.
- RULING
- "Yes." The doubled mine also applies to Impact of Industry. Events that score per worker gain nothing from the wonder, because it makes one worker produce twice as much rather than adding a worker.

Q&A5
Pacts may not be negotiated before they are offeredcommunity high-engagement
- QUESTION
- Before spending your political action to offer a pact, may you discuss with the other player which pact you would propose and which side each of you would take?
- ANSWER
- No. The rulebook's Note on pacts states that you should not circumvent the offer rule by discussing the pact before you offer it. You choose the pact and assign the sides yourself, then offer it; the other player accepts or refuses. Either way your Politics Phase ends.

- QUESTION
- After declaring a Revolution, which spends every civil action you have, do you still produce at the end of your turn?
- ANSWER
- Yes. A Revolution consumes your civil actions but leaves the rest of your turn intact, and you carry out your End-of-Turn sequence and Production Phase normally. The only thing that makes you skip your entire Production Phase is an uprising — having more discontent workers than unused workers.

- QUESTION
- What happens to yellow or blue tokens gained when every square of the bank is already full?
- ANSWER
- "Your banks are always filled from left to right. Each token is placed in a square. If all the squares are full, additional tokens may be kept in the rightmost section. There is no limit to the number of tokens that can be there."

- QUESTION
- If you take a technology card and then decide you never want to pay its science cost, can you get rid of it?
- ANSWER
- No. There is no action that discards a civil card from your hand. It occupies a hand slot until it becomes antiquated — two ages later — and is discarded during the End of an Age. Take only cards you intend to play, and note that hand-blocking an opponent by taking a card costs you a hand slot for a long time.

- QUESTION
- With two Age A laboratories in play, how much bonus science does Leonardo da Vinci add?
- ANSWER
- None. The bonus equals the level of your best laboratory or library — Age I gives +1, Age II gives +2, Age III gives +3. Age A buildings are level 0, so da Vinci's science bonus does nothing until you develop at least an Age I science technology.

Homer's free military resource survives replacing him on the same turnlinked official sourcecommunity high-engagement
- SITUATION
- A player has Homer in play, replaces him with a new leader, and then wants to build or upgrade a military unit using Homer's free military resource that turn.
- RULING
- The resource is still available. Homer's ability is not triggered by building a unit; it places a temporary military resource in your pool each turn, the same way Patriotism does. Replacing Homer removes the ability going forward but does not take back the resource already granted this turn. Any unused portion evaporates at end of turn.

- SITUATION
- A Revolution requires you to spend civil actions equal to your civil action total, which normally means none may have been spent beforehand. With Hammurabi in play, a military action can be spent as a civil action — so the question is whether that must happen before or after the Revolution is declared.
- RULING
- Either order is legal. You may spend Hammurabi's military-as-civil action before declaring the Revolution or afterwards. A common line is to play a new leader, replace the old one to recover the civil action, and then declare the Revolution with your civil actions still intact.
