The Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle-earth
ERRATA1
Timing of the "3 different Race symbols" alliance bonuscommunity high-engagement
- RULING
- The bonus triggers immediately — as soon as you first have 3 different Race symbols. The English rulebook's "when you have 3 different Race symbols" is ambiguous, but the original French ("dès que vous avez" = "as soon as you have") uses the same precise timing as the "2 matching symbols" bonus. Treat it as immediate, not "whenever you choose later."

Earning two extra turns in the same turn does not stackdesigner
- CONTEXT
- A player triggered two separate "take another turn" effects within a single turn (e.g. a yellow card that also advanced the ring onto an extra-turn space) and asked whether both extra turns are granted.
- RULING
- "You get only 1 extra turn. You cannot add extra turns." Multiple extra-turn bonuses earned during the same turn grant only one extra turn. You can still chain extra turns across different turns — each separate turn may earn its own extra turn.
Q&A4
Are bonus effects optional or mandatory?community high-engagement
- QUESTION
- Are the game's bonus effects — Quest of the Ring track bonuses, Alliance token effects, Landmark tile effects (including troop movements), and purple-card moves — obligatory or optional?
- ANSWER
- They are optional. The rulebook (p.6) uses "you may" for these effects, which makes them a choice. Note that an immediate effect you decline when it is triggered is lost — it cannot be saved and used later.

- QUESTION
- Can players look through the discard pile, and do the 3 unused cards from each chapter belong to it?
- ANSWER
- No — the discard pile is face down and may not be examined by either player. Unlike 7 Wonders Duel, the 3 unused cards from each chapter go face down into the discard pile (not out of the game), as do cards discarded for coins (rulebook p.3). The only time a player sees discard cards is when an effect specifically lets them take or play a card from the discard.

- QUESTION
- Can both players each claim the "3 different Race symbols" bonus once per game, or does one player claiming it lock the other out?
- ANSWER
- Each player may claim it once per game. One player claiming the bonus does not prevent the other from claiming it. This is how the designers play it in their own published playthrough video.

- QUESTION
- Is a race-alliance ability such as "take another turn after you take a Landmark tile" a single-use ability or a permanent one?
- ANSWER
- It is permanent — the ability applies for the rest of the game every time its condition is met. However, it cannot be applied retroactively to the same action that granted it; it works from the next qualifying trigger onward.

EDGE CASES3
A Fortress counts as permanent presence in its regioncommunity high-engagement
- SITUATION
- Players were unsure whether Fortresses have any gameplay effect, since the rulebook barely mentions them.
- RULING
- A Fortress counts as your presence in its region. It contributes to the "presence in every region" win condition, cannot be removed by the opponent except via the Quest of the Ring track effect and the Ents alliance token power, and does not block the opponent's military units from occupying the same region (rulebook p.7).
A single shared discard pile persists across all three chapterscommunity high-engagement
- SITUATION
- Players asked whether the discard pile refreshes between chapters or accumulates across the whole game, which matters for effects that retrieve a card from the discard.
- RULING
- There is one shared discard pile for the entire game; it does not refresh between chapters. Cards discarded throughout the game — including the unused setup cards from each chapter — all accumulate in it, so an effect that takes a card from the discard may pull from the current or any previous chapter. (Refreshing per chapter is a house rule, not the official rule.)

- SITUATION
- A player already holds two pairs of matching Green symbols (and their tokens) and then gains a single new Green card of a third, different race.
- RULING
- Green-card Race symbols count toward both the "2 matching symbols" and the "3 different symbols" alliance conditions simultaneously. A single new Green card that gives you a 3rd different symbol can therefore trigger the "3 different symbols" bonus, even though it is only one additional card.
