ERRATA1
  • Counting basis for "more [colour] than [colour]" taskscommunity high-engagement
    RULING
The English rulebook (p. 18) describes these tasks as requiring more cards of the specified colour "in your hand at the end of the mission". That wording is an error. Count the cards of each colour among the tricks you have won at the end of the mission, not the cards remaining in your hand.

DESIGNER CLARIFICATIONS1
  • Sonar tokens in the two-player "Rapture of the Deep" missiondesignercommunity high-engagement
    CONTEXT
In a two-player game the crew consists of two humans plus Tonoja, and the "Rapture of the Deep" modifier reduces the shared sonar pool, so groups were unsure whether they get one token or none.
    RULING
The crew receives one sonar token. Tonoja counts as a crew member for this purpose, and rulebook p. 19 instructs you to "place two fewer sonar tokens in the middle of the table than there are crew members."

Q&A11
  • What may be said out loud during task selectiondesigner
    QUESTION
May crew members speak in generalities during task assignment — for example "that would be a good task for me" or "I should avoid that one"?
    ANSWER
"You can discuss whether the mission cards are inherently contradictory, but not that your own hand makes yours impossible (unless you are specifically saying 'let's give up'). You can also request a call for help (passing a card) to fix the situation."

  • When the number is declared for prediction tasksdesigner
    QUESTION
Two tasks ask a crew member to predict how many tricks they will win. Is that number chosen the moment the task is taken, or after all tasks have been assigned?
    ANSWER
The number is declared when you take the task. "It's really hard to justify any interpretation other than 'when you take the task' in the absence of a specific rulebook mention of that other timing. Otherwise, how could one know when to do it?" The licensed Board Game Arena implementation resolves it the same way.

  • Which task difficulty values apply in the two-player gamecommunity high-engagement
    QUESTION
Task cards only print difficulty values for 3, 4 and 5 players. Which column applies when playing with two?
    ANSWER
Use the 3-player values. The two-player variant treats Tonoja as a third crew member for every purpose, including task difficulty.

  • Submarines and multi-coloured task illustrationscommunity high-engagement
    QUESTION
Tasks such as "I will win a trick where all card values are odd" show a four-colour icon and carry no exclusion text. Do submarine cards count towards them?
    ANSWER
No. Rulebook p. 16: "Multi-coloured illustrations always only relate to blue, green, yellow and pink playing cards, never to submarine cards." Only the "all values less than 7" card repeats the exclusion in its own fine print, but the rule governs every such task.

  • What "I will win exactly two 9s" requirescommunity high-engagement
    QUESTION
Does this task refer to winning tricks whose card values total 9, or to winning two cards of value 9?
    ANSWER
You must win exactly two cards of value 9, in any colours and across any number of tricks. Winning a third 9 fails the mission. The number of tricks won is irrelevant.

  • What "I will win a 5 with a 7" requirescommunity high-engagement
    QUESTION
Does this task require you to play the 7 yourself, or merely to win a trick that happens to contain both a 5 and a 7?
    ANSWER
You must play the 7 yourself, that 7 must be the card that wins the trick, and at least one 5 of any colour must be among the other cards played into that trick.

  • What "I will win a 6 with a 6" requirescommunity high-engagement
    QUESTION
Since you also win the card you played, does taking a trick with your own 6 satisfy this task on its own?
    ANSWER
No. The trick must contain two 6s — the 6 you play to win the trick, and a second 6 played by another crew member. The German and Dutch printings word it explicitly as winning a 6 with *another* 6.

  • What "I will win all the cards in at least one of the 4 colours" requirescommunity high-engagement
    QUESTION
Does this mean winning values 1 through 9 across any colours, or every card of a single colour?
    ANSWER
Every card of a single colour. You may not mix colours — you must win all nine blue, or all nine pink, or all nine yellow, or all nine green cards.

  • When a trick-condition task is completecommunity high-engagement
    QUESTION
For tasks like "I will win a trick whose card values are all greater than 5", must every trick you win satisfy the condition?
    ANSWER
No. You need to win one trick at any point that meets the condition; tricks that do not meet it are ignored. If this is the only task in the mission, the mission ends the moment that trick is won.

  • "All tasks to one crew member" versus "one crew member wanted"community high-engagement
    QUESTION
Mission 6 says "all tasks to one crew member" and missions 14–16 say "one crew member wanted". Both give one player every task, so what is the difference?
    ANSWER
How that player is chosen. In mission 6 the crew may discuss who takes the tasks. In missions 14–16 the captain polls the crew in clockwise order and each player may only answer yes or no; the first player to answer yes takes all the tasks.

  • Completing "I will win no [colour]" without winning any trick at allcommunity high-engagement
    QUESTION
Does "I will win no [colour]" require winning at least one trick that contains none of that colour, or does winning zero tricks also complete it?
    ANSWER
Winning zero tricks completes the task. There is no requirement to win at least one trick — the card would print that requirement if it existed.

EDGE CASES5
  • When a task counts as completecommunity high-engagement
    SITUATION
A negative task such as "I will win no pink cards" appears satisfied after the first trick, and the crew is unsure whether they must keep playing.
    RULING
A task is complete only when its conditions have been met and can no longer fail. For a negative task you keep playing until failure has become impossible — for "I will win no pink", until every pink card has been played. This does not always mean playing the full hand.

  • What counts as "the last trick"community high-engagement
    SITUATION
A crew wants to stop playing and declare the trick they have just won to be "the last trick" for the "I will win the last trick" task.
    RULING
The last trick is the final trick that can physically be played that hand; the crew cannot choose when it occurs. Because the task can still fail while cards remain, it is not complete until the hand has been played out.

  • Who may take "I will win submarine # and no other submarines"community high-engagement
    SITUATION
The crew reveals a "win submarine #N and no other submarines" task and is unsure whether anyone other than the holder of that submarine can attempt it.
    RULING
Only the crew member holding that submarine can complete it — anyone else taking it is an automatic loss. The exception is the "I will win the 3 submarine" card, which omits "and no other" and can therefore also be completed by the captain; it carries difficulty 1 rather than 3.

  • How to win the specified submarine without winning otherscommunity high-engagement
    SITUATION
A crew member must win submarine 2 and no other submarines, and wonders whether to capture it with a higher submarine of their own.
    RULING
Win it by taking a trick that another crew member trumped into with that submarine, or by leading it once all higher submarines have been played. Capturing it with a higher submarine of your own also wins that higher submarine and fails the task.

  • "I will win no submarines" when the captain holds a submarinecommunity high-engagement
    SITUATION
On the first mission the only task is "I will win no submarines", and since the captain always holds a submarine the crew believes the mission cannot be won.
    RULING
Apply the pass rule at the bottom of rulebook p. 9 — when there are fewer tasks than crew members, a player may pass during task selection. The captain passes and a crew member holding zero or one submarine takes the task. This pass rule does not exist in The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine, which is the usual source of the confusion.
