  • Tiebreaker reversed in the English and French rulescommunity high-engagementlinked official source
    RULING
The English and French rulebooks state that in a tie the winner is the tied player with the *fewest* empty estate spaces. This is a translation error. Per the original German rules, the tie is won by the tied player with the **most** empty estate spaces. The English/French translator confirmed in-thread that his wording is wrong and the German text is correct.

DESIGNER CLARIFICATIONS2
  • Tiles that modify the same action are cumulativedesigner
    CONTEXT
A player owns two tiles that each modify the same standard action — e.g. tile 3 (receive 2 Silverlings instead of 1 when selling goods) and tile 4 (also receive a worker tile when selling goods).
    RULING
"The changes that the tiles do to the standard actions are cumulative." If you own both, a single sell action gives you both the extra Silverling and the extra worker. (Stated by the designer in the German Spielbox forum.)

  • Buying from the central black depot: timing (2011 edition)publisher
    CONTEXT
Whether a player may interrupt a die action (e.g. a Castle or City Hall placement) to buy a tile from the black depot and place it immediately.
    RULING
Stefan Brück (alea): "Had we wanted people [to] buy from the Black Depot 'during' a dice action, then we would have used the word 'during' and not 'between'." You may buy a black-depot tile before, between, or after your two dice actions, but **not during** an action — so you cannot interrupt a Castle or City Hall action to buy and immediately place a tile. (The 2019 Anniversary / Special Edition later changed the wording to also permit buying "during" an action.)

Q&A6
  • City Hall and the "regardless of colour" wordingcommunity high-engagement
    QUESTION
Does City Hall let you place a tile of any colour onto any space, ignoring colour-matching?
    ANSWER
No. "Regardless of colour" / "any space" means City Hall gives you a wild *number* for placing a tile — you ignore the die value. Normal placement rules still apply: the tile's colour must match the space's colour and the tile must be adjacent to a previously-placed tile. (Rulebook p.8: building advantages are activated via placement, no die result is required, but "the colors must match and the new tile must be adjacent to at least one previously-placed tile.")

  • Boats and turn order: stacking markerscommunity high-engagement
    QUESTION
When placing a boat advances your turn-order marker onto a space already holding another player's marker, who is the start player?
    ANSWER
You stack your marker on top of the one(s) already in that space. The marker on top of the stack is the start player and takes the white die. (Rulebook pp.3–4.)

  • Mines still produce Silverlings at the end of the gamecommunity high-engagement
    QUESTION
Do mines produce Silverlings at the very end of the game?
    ANSWER
Yes. Mines produce Silverlings at the end of every round, including the fifth round of the final phase — which is also the end of the game. (Rulebook: "A phase ends after five rounds. Players with mines now receive the corresponding number of Silverlings.")

  • No points for the starting castle tilecommunity high-engagement
    QUESTION
Do you score victory points (e.g. for completing a region) for the pre-placed starting Castle tile?
    ANSWER
No. There are no initial points for the starting Castle tile; each player's score marker begins on the 0/100 space of the score track.

  • The castle's additional action uses a virtual diecommunity high-engagement
    QUESTION
Using the additional action granted by placing a castle tile, can I take two workers?
    ANSWER
Yes. You do not roll a die for the castle's additional action — you may perform any action as if you had an extra die with any value you choose. Taking two workers is a legal choice (though usually not the strongest play).

  • Changing a die from 1 to 6 (or 6 to 1) with a workercommunity high-engagement
    QUESTION
Can a worker tile change a die's result from 1 to 6 or from 6 to 1, and what does it cost?
    ANSWER
Yes. A worker adjusts a die's result up or down by 1, and changing 1↔6 is also permitted for one worker — the values 1 and 6 are treated as arithmetically consecutive. (Rulebook: "...adjust your die's result up or down by 1. Changing a die's result from 1 to 6 or from 6 to 1 is also permitted and also costs one worker tile.")

EDGE CASES2
  • Whether a tile's placement effect is mandatory or optionalcommunity high-engagement
    SITUATION
The rules give no single blanket statement on whether the benefit generated by placing a tile must be taken.
    RULING
Follow each tile's own wording. Where the ability says the player "may" do something (e.g. a market, which lets you "may immediately take" a tile), it is optional; where it says the player "immediately takes / carries out" something (e.g. a bank, which "immediately takes 2 Silverlings"), it is mandatory. There is no designer ruling on this; it is the community consensus reading of the printed ability text.

  • Running out of componentscommunity high-engagement
    SITUATION
A group finds itself short of pieces late in the game.
    RULING
Workers and Silverlings are unlimited — if you run out of the physical pieces, substitute other tokens. You should not run out of hexagonal tiles in a correctly played game; running short usually points to a play error such as failing to restock the depots after a completed phase, or taking a building's bonus tiles from storage when they should come from the board.
