  • Player count must be decided before setup step 1designer
    CONTEXT
Some players argued you could wait until after seeing the initial infection (step 4 of setup) before deciding how many players would participate in the game.
    RULING
"Do this before step 1. (This is essentially the 'decide who is playing the game' step which, like the 'put the board in the center of the table' rule, we don't bother to include.)"

  • "May" or "can" means optional; all other directives are mandatorydesigner
    CONTEXT
Players questioned whether win bonuses and other instructed actions were optional or required.
    RULING
"If we write that you 'may' or 'can' do something, it's optional. If we tell you to do something, you're required to do it. Refer to the bonus in question and read the text with this in mind."

  • Players may change seats after cards are dealtdesigner
    CONTEXT
Players asked whether they could swap seats or change play order after seeing their dealt cards in step 5 of setup.
    RULING
"There's nothing in the rules that specifically prohibits changing seats. We watched some of our playtesters do this and didn't include a rule to prevent it."

  • You must play each game until you actually losecommunity high-engagementdesigner-confirmed (indirect)
    QUESTION
Is it legal to quit a game partway through because it's a lost cause, particularly to prevent additional panic stickers from being placed during outbreaks?
    ANSWER
No. You are supposed to play until you actually lose. Conceding early to avoid stickers is not permitted.

    QUESTION

  • Medic's Local Connection upgrade requires using the treat disease actioncommunity high-engagementdesigner-confirmed (indirect)
    QUESTION
If the Medic has the Local Connection upgrade, does curing or eradicating a disease automatically remove all cubes from adjacent cities?
    ANSWER
No. The Medic must actively use the treat disease action to trigger Local Connection. It does not auto-trigger when a disease is cured or eradicated. The upgrade still counts as using the treat disease action, but lets it affect an adjacent city.

    QUESTION

EDGE CASES1
  • Game ending in the middle of a chain outbreakcommunity high-engagementdesigner-confirmed (indirect)
    SITUATION
The outbreaks marker reaches the last space during a chain reaction outbreak, ending the game while several cities in the chain have not yet been processed.
    RULING
Per page 13 of the rulebook, when the game ends during a chain outbreak you choose which cities in the chain receive outbreak stickers. The game does not automatically sticker every city that would have eventually been reached by the chain.
