  • Clergy tile 31 réis icon is a misprintdesigner
    RULING
"Its a missprint, the tile should have a plus sign, not a minus sign." The rules text is correct and the tile art is wrong: Clergy tile 31 earns you +2 réis every time you play a Treasury card into your Portfolio. It is not a discount.

  • Store majority values for Tools are 6 / 4 / 2community high-engagement
    RULING
The early PDF rulebook printed the Tools store-majority values incorrectly. The gameboard and the printed rulebook agree on 6 wigs for the most, 4 for the second-most and 2 for the third-most, and those are the correct values. Independently confirmed four years later in thread 2772742 ("The values printed on the board are the correct values: First = 6 Points / Second = 4 points / Third = 2 points").

  • Clergy tiles 27, 28 and 29 revised wordingdesigner
    RULING
"In the latest player aid you can read: 27. Get a discount of 2 Influence to Visit or Follow a Visit to the Marquis." The printed "Spend -2 Influence" is a discount on the Influence cost, not an extra payment and not a gain.

  • What "gain Influence" actually pays outdesigner
    CONTEXT
Rulebook p.10 states that when you gain Influence you always earn the total Influence depicted at the tops of the Noble and Ship cards in your Portfolio, which reads as if every Influence reward paid out the whole Portfolio total.
    RULING
"You trigger influence by tucking a card in your portfolio only if it is a ship. In that case, you get influence with the value of all Noble and ship cards in the docks (top part of your portfolio). The other way to trigger influence with the same value mention above is during the church scoring by pleasing the Marquis (discarding one or more clergy tiles). You may also gain influence but with the fixed number if you tuck card number 3 and by getting a reward during city building."

  • Sponsoring an Event is not a Visitdesigner
    RULING
"1- When you sponsor an event, you only take the action/good depicted on the card. 2- Nobody can follow your visit, because you are not visiting a Noble. 3- you don't pay influence because you are not visiting a noble."
    AUTHOR: newrev (Vital Lacerda, designer)SOURCE: boardgamegeek.com(7 replies)DATE: 2017-06-30
  • Sponsoring still pays the sponsored action's own costsdesigner
    RULING
"Yes, you pay a value in money to play the card, and then all associated costs if there is any." The réis paid for the Treasury value only buys the right to sponsor; land price, hiring costs and any other cost of the sponsored action are paid on top.

  • Taking an identical Ship is building, not upgradingdesigner
    RULING
"Taking another similar ship is not upgrading a ship. To upgrade you need to go to a bigger ship." Taking a Ship of the same hull size is a normal Build a Ship, paid in full, and if it puts you over your Portfolio limit you must discard.

  • Upgrading a Ship that is at seadesigner
    RULING
"It stays at sea until your next turn. Then, cargo is discarded and the ship becomes available as usual." Ships may be upgraded at any time, but the upgraded Ship only becomes available at the beginning of its owner's turn.

  • Clergy tile 3 counts only Political cardsdesigner
    RULING
"You only get that wig when you play a political card in your portfolio." Building a Ship does not trigger it — "you don't play a ship in your portfolio. You build a ship." Decree 68, by contrast, counts every card in the Portfolio.

  • Building on a Clergy bonus space while holding 4 Clergy tilesdesigner
    RULING
"you can build a store over a space which gives the clergy action as a bonus, just ignoring the bonus. Just as you can play a card with the clergy bonus, but must ignore it." The build or card play is legal, the Clergy bonus is forfeited, and the Cardinal "doesn't move at all."

  • Discarded Clergy tiles leave the gamedesigner
    RULING
"The only tils that return to the bag are the ones you don't keep during setup. All others are sent to the gamebox and out of the game." This covers tiles discarded during Church Scoring and tiles discarded for a bonus.

  • Portfolio card benefits are mandatorydesigner
    RULING
"You are correct, if you cannot take the benefit, you canot play the card i. Your portfolio. The exception is the penalty card that is described in the rules." All benefits on a card played into the Portfolio must be taken in full; a card whose benefit you cannot execute cannot be played there.

  • Decrees for "the most" of a good need at least onedesigner
    RULING

  • Officials in a plaza never return to the officedesigner
    RULING

  • The Portfolio is one space for discard purposesdesigner
    RULING
"Discard a card any time you need room for it. See the portfolio as one." You may discard from a top slot to make room for a card going into a bottom slot, and vice versa; the capacity limit applies to the Portfolio as a whole.

  • Discarding the card whose bonus you just useddesigner
    RULING
"Yes you can do it with any card. Once you get the bonus, you can discard it immediately to get room to a new one." A card played into the Portfolio may itself be discarded to make room for the Ship or card its own benefit produced.

  • The End of Period counts as a turn for the Marquis cubedesigner
    RULING
"See the end of period as a round where each player takes a special turn. You can spend one Marquis cube to get a second decree." The one-per-turn limit on Rubble Set markers applies to the End of Period as a whole, so one extra Decree per player.

  • Discounts apply once per operationdesigner
    RULING
"the discount is per operation, ok? You pay for all officials once, you pay for influence once, you pay for the store once. You pay the sponsor once." A réis discount is applied once to each payment, not once per item paid for, but it does apply to every separate payment in the same turn.

    RULING
"The findings on the land are not mandatory. So you are able to take the full action. You just don't get the reward. So you don't even move the Cardinal." You may build on a land space and decline its reward, which also means a Cardinal-movement reward is not taken.
