Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion
ERRATA4
Heal glossary wording restricts the wrong sidedesigner
- RULING
- The printed glossary line "a figure can only target allies unless otherwise specified" is misworded and should read that a figure cannot target enemies with a heal unless otherwise specified. A figure may therefore target itself with a ranged Heal ability. Isaac confirmed the correction directly: "Sorry for the confusion. The rule should say something like this instead."

- RULING
- "You are correct. In order to determine the focus in this case, the initiative values would have to be shown, and they are not. Sorry for the confusion."

- RULING
- The printed special rule omits the number ("have their maximum hit points value reduced to, but gain a permanent Shield L+2"). Isaac's correction: "Reduce their hit points to 1."

- RULING
- A Living Corpse spawns for each of the four pillars destroyed, not only for the first pillar on each side. Asked whether the count was 2 or 4, Isaac answered: "4 total."

DESIGNER CLARIFICATIONS6
The Favorite's bonus is doubled by ×2 and erased by nulldesigner
- CONTEXT
- Players assumed the Hatchet's +3 from The Favorite was added after the attack modifier card, so that ×2 would not double it and null would still leave 3 damage.
- RULING
- "The +3 would be doubled, and the null card always causes zero damage."
AUTHOR: Cephalofair (Isaac Childres, designer)SOURCE: boardgamegeek.com(9 replies, 36 thumbs)DATE: 2020-04-11Order of operations when resolving an attackdesigner
- RULING
- "All attack bonus (like the +3 or the doubling or the effect of poison) is applied first in whatever order you want, then you apply the attack modifier, then you apply shield." Worked example given by the designer: an Attack 3 against a monster with Shield 1, using both the Favorite bonus and the Double Throw bonus, resolves as (3+3)×2 = 12, then the attack modifier (−1), then the shield (−1), for 10 damage.
AUTHOR: Cephalofair (Isaac Childres, designer)SOURCE: boardgamegeek.com(11 replies, 40 thumbs)DATE: 2020-06-27The Favorite token moves only after the attack resolvesdesigner
- RULING
- "The token is placed on the monster after the attack is resolved, but the +3 is added during the attack."
AUTHOR: Cephalofair (Isaac Childres, designer)SOURCE: boardgamegeek.com(11 replies, 40 thumbs)DATE: 2020-06-27Sand Devil ignores difficult terrain but not obstacles, objectives or wallsdesigner
- CONTEXT
- The Red Guard's level 5 Sand Devil is a trap rather than a summon, and the card does not state how it interacts with terrain when moved.
- RULING
- "One bit of clarification that is not on the card: it is unaffected by difficult terrain but can't be moved through obstacles or objectives (or walls, of course)."
AUTHOR: Cephalofair (Isaac Childres, designer)SOURCE: boardgamegeek.com(56 replies, 33 thumbs)DATE: 2020-07-03A spawned monster does not enter the hex it appears indesigner
- CONTEXT
- Players asked whether the Red Guard's Flame Shroud, which triggers on a monster entering an adjacent hex, fires when a monster spawns adjacent to him.
- RULING
- "A spawned monster doesn't technically enter the hex it in which it is spawned. Entering a hex is specifically tied to movement, which it is not doing." A spawn is treated exactly as setup during the reveal of a room, so entry-triggered effects do not fire.

- CONTEXT
- Scenario 3's difficult terrain is drawn without internal hex lines, leading players to treat the whole purple outline as a single space for movement and for ranged attack range.
- RULING
- "Any hex that has a purple border takes 2 movement to get into, and 2 movement to move through. For example in scenario 3, if you were to be in any hex inside the purple border it would take 2 movement per step. 2, 4, 6 etc."

Q&A3
Can you grant an action to a character who is long resting?community high-engagementlinked official source
- QUESTION
- A character has declared a long rest for the round. Can an ally still grant them an action or an attack that round?
- ANSWER
- Yes. A long-resting character still has a turn and can be granted actions and attacks, and can still use items. Per the official Gloomhaven FAQ, the restrictions are elsewhere: you cannot grant actions at all to a stunned character, and cannot grant attack abilities to a disarmed character.
Are a character's abilities suspended while long resting?community high-engagement
- QUESTION
- During a long rest, do active and passive abilities such as the Hatchet's Overwatch or the Red Guard's Shield Spikes stop working, and does existing Shield still apply?
- ANSWER
- No, nothing is suspended. All active and passive abilities remain in effect during a long rest, any existing Shield still applies, and items can still be used. The only restriction is that you play no new cards that round.
Can you perform part of a loss action without losing the card?community high-engagement
- QUESTION
- On a card whose bottom action reads "Move 4" followed by a separated persistent effect, can you perform only the Move 4 and skip the rest, keeping the card out of the lost pile?
- ANSWER
- No. There are no loss abilities, only loss actions — performing any ability within a loss action sends the whole card to the lost pile. The only way to avoid losing the card is to use the card's generic Move 2 or Attack 2 instead.
EDGE CASES2
Poison applied by an attack does not boost that same attackcommunity high-engagement
- SITUATION
- A viper with Attack 1 attacks a character who is not yet poisoned, and the attack itself inflicts Poison.
- RULING
- The attack applies the condition but gains no benefit from it. All attack effects, including conditions, are resolved and assigned after the attack, so the target takes 1 damage and becomes poisoned rather than taking the poison bonus on the triggering attack.
"Never leave a hex adjacent to a monster" battle goalcommunity high-engagement
- SITUATION
- A character standing adjacent to a monster wants to reposition to another hex that is also adjacent to that same monster, or to leave and re-enter the original hex within the same turn.
- RULING
- Both fail the goal. Exiting the hex is the trigger, regardless of where you end up: you may not reposition into another valid adjacent hex, and you may not leave and re-enter the hex by the end of the turn. You are locked in place until the monster is dead — that difficulty is the point of the goal.

HOW MIRA KNOWS

Not an AI guessing rules. A curated archive.
Every answer Mira gives is grounded in an official rulebook — not in what a language model thinks the rules probably say. Our team reads, structures, and curates each game's rulebook before Mira can answer a single question about it.

At the end of each round, the player with the most of the goal trait scores points equal to their amount; the player with the second most scores fewer.
