Discovery Tiles step resolves before Influence Sectorsdesigner
- RULING
- "Your assumption is correct -- this is indeed something we missed in the editing process. The rule change was meant to be consistent between Explore and Combat. So, on pages 21 and 32, the Discovery Tiles step should come before the Influence Sectors step."

- RULING
- "You can form Diplomatic Relations at the end of Combat Phase. This is indeed an oversight in the 2nd edition rules. Lautapelit.fi will fix this in future rulebook updates."
AUTHOR: kilgore (Sampo Sikiö, designer)SOURCE: boardgamegeek.com(16 replies, 18 thumbs)DATE: 2021-03-01Hull value typo in the page 22 combat examplecommunity high-engagement
- RULING
- The combat example on page 22 states that Vernor's Interceptor has a Hull of 1, but the depicted Blueprint carries no Hull symbols. A Ship with no Hull symbols has a Hull Value of 0 and is destroyed by any damage at all. The hull values in the combat example were corrected in the publisher's updated digital rulebook.
The revised digital rulebook supersedes the boxed rulebookpublisher
- RULING
- Lautapelit.fi published a revised rulebook together with an official change log, and the webshop links point to that revised version. Play from the current digital rulebook rather than the copy shipped in the box; the revision restructures the Combat Phase into three steps with an Aftermath step, adds the Warp Portal Tile to the component list, and clarifies Antimatter Splitter targeting, Colony Ship flip timing, Influence Disc movement limits, repeated Reactions, Diplomatic Relations through Warp Portal Connections, and Eraka's Control of Explored Sectors.

DESIGNER CLARIFICATIONS9
Colony Ships and Diplomatic Relations while passingdesigner
- CONTEXT
- Passing is a type of Action, so players asked whether the "at any time during their Action" permissions still apply on the turn you pass.
- RULING
- "You are allowed to use Colony Ships and form Diplomatic Relations when you Pass."
AUTHOR: kilgore (Sampo Sikiö, designer)SOURCE: boardgamegeek.com(16 replies, 12 thumbs)DATE: 2021-03-01Retreat destinations are chosen per Ship classdesigner
- CONTEXT
- The rulebook uses the singular throughout the Retreat rules, leaving it unclear whether two Ship classes retreating from the same battle must go to the same Sector.
- RULING
- "You are right in that the RAW aren't explicit in this regard. However, the intention is that each Ship class can choose which sector (legal of course) they retreat towards." All Ships of a single class must retreat to the same Sector: "The intention is that all Ships of one class retreat to the same sector."

- CONTEXT
- Page 21 opens with "remaining Ships attack opponent Population Cubes in their Sector", which reads as mandatory, before the following sentence introduces "may".
- RULING
- "It is not mandatory. 2nd edition rules state that 'At the end of the Combat Phase, remaining Ships attack opponent Population Cubes in their Sector. When Attacking Population Cubes, each Ship may attack once with its non-Missile weapon.' 'May' indicates that it is not mandatory. ... There is no rule change."

- CONTEXT
- In Combat Phase step 3B (Influence Sectors, page 21), it matters whether conquered Discs are removed and replaced Sector by Sector or whether every removal happens first — a player with a full Influence Track who loses an inner Sector and wins an outer one in the same Round can only take the outer Sector if all removals come first.
- RULING
- "All removals take place first."
AUTHOR: kilgore (Sampo Sikiö, designer), relayed verbatim by Sycopath (Leonard Ash)SOURCE: boardgamegeek.com(15 replies)DATE: 2022-06-22Starbases cannot retreatdesigner
- CONTEXT
- Starbases count as Ships (page 6) and the Retreat rules on page 19 never define "immobile", so rules-as-written appeared to permit a Starbase to retreat.
- RULING
- "Starbases are not allowed to move; this includes retreating."

- CONTEXT
- When a player has two Ship classes tied on Initiative in the same battle, the order in which those classes fire is the player's choice — the question was whether that choice is locked in for the whole battle.
- RULING
- "Can a player with multiple ship classes with the same initiative in a battle change their order of attacks each engagement round? A: Yes"

- CONTEXT
- Reputation Tiles are drawn in order of entry, but the rulebook does not say whether the Defender exception applies when the Sector's controller moved Ships in last.
- RULING

- CONTEXT
- Collecting Income and then paying Upkeep as two sequential steps produces different bankruptcy outcomes than resolving them together.
- RULING
- "Receiving income happens as part of paying your civilization upkeep — they are interconnected and happen simultaneously. Before either can happen, you must first calculate the net difference between your income and civilization upkeep cost. If the net difference between those would cause your money storage marker to move below zero on your storage track, you must trade other resources for money to cover the difference and/or abandon sectors until your civilization upkeep cost is small enough to be paid with the money you have. Once you have traded resources and/or abandoned sectors you then calculate the net difference between your income and civilization upkeep cost again."

Q&A8
Claiming a Discovery Tile left unclaimed after combatdesignerpublisherlinked official source
- QUESTION
- If a Sector's Discovery Tile is left unclaimed at the end of a Combat Phase, who eventually takes it and when?
- ANSWER
- "In these situations the player who Controls the Sector takes the Discovery Tile at the end of the Combat Phase. If no one Controls the Sector, the first person to place an Influence Disc in the Sector immediately takes the Discovery Tile. If no Influence Disc is placed, the first person to have a Ship in the Sector at the end of a future Combat Phase takes the Discovery Tile."

- QUESTION
- The Rare Tech section of the Tech Tray has only seven slots. If more Rare Tech Tiles are drawn than fit, are the extras discarded, returned to the bag, or kept available?
- ANSWER
- There is no hard limit on how much Rare Tech can be available for purchase. When the drawn tiles exceed the tray's slots, place the excess tiles next to the tray; they remain available for Research. The revised rulebook makes the same point on page 5.

- QUESTION
- If a Plasma Cannon rolls a 5 and a Computer bonus turns it into a Hit, does that Hit inflict the weapon's full damage or only one damage?
- ANSWER
- Full damage. Hits inflict damage equal to the number of bursts on their weapon's Die Symbol, regardless of whether the Hit came from a natural 6 or from a Computer-modified roll. The revised rulebook rewrote page 19 to say exactly that. Two related limits still hold: a natural 6 cannot be blocked by Shields, and a natural 1 can never be turned into a Hit by any Computer.
Influence Action targets do not require an unpinned Shipcommunity high-engagement
- QUESTION
- The Explore Action requires an unpinned Ship next to the target. Does the Influence Action carry the same restriction?
- ANSWER
- No. The Explore Action requires a Sector you Control or at least one unpinned Ship next to the Unexplored Zone. The Influence Action has no unpinned requirement — you may move an Influence Disc to an Uncontrolled Sector that neighbours a Sector you Control, or where only your Ships are present, even if every one of those Ships is pinned.
Colony Ships may be used and refreshed in any order during an Influence Actioncommunity high-engagement
- QUESTION
- During an Influence Action, must Colony Ships be used at a fixed point, or can they be flipped, used and refreshed between Influence Disc placements?
- ANSWER
- They can be interleaved freely. Colony Ship use, Colony Ship refreshes, Influence Disc activations and forming Diplomatic Relations may be done in any order and combination throughout the Influence Action. The only constraint is that a Colony Ship can only be refreshed if a flipped one exists to refresh.
Pinning is resolved by total Ship countcommunity high-engagement
- QUESTION
- Does each enemy Ship pin one specific Ship of yours, or is pinning worked out across the whole Sector?
- ANSWER
- Across the whole Sector, by count. If the total number of your Ships in a Sector is larger than the total number of all Ships in that Sector that are not yours, you may move one of your Ships out. Individual Ships are not paired off against each other.
Missile counts on Technology Tiles versus Upgrade Tilescommunity high-engagement
- QUESTION
- The Flux Missile Technology Tile shows one missile while the corresponding Upgrade Tile shows two. Is the Technology Tile a misprint?
- ANSWER
- No. The Missile icon printed on a Technology Tile uses different iconography from the damage-dice icons on the Upgrade Tile and is not a count of missiles gained. The Upgrade Tile is authoritative for what the Ship Part does. Plasma Missiles are printed the same way.
Hydran and Planta ambassador slots below four playerscommunity high-engagement
- QUESTION
- The Hydran Progress Species Board has a dedicated Ambassador slot, but Ambassadors are disabled below four players. Is that slot simply unusable in a two- or three-player game?
- ANSWER
- Yes. In games with fewer than four players the dedicated Ambassador slot on the Hydran Progress and Planta Species Boards goes unused, unless you are playing with the Minor Species expansion.
EDGE CASES2
Discovery Tile when the Sector controller's Population survives the attackdesigner
- SITUATION
- An attacker enters a Sector that Descendants of Draco Control and that holds Ancients plus a Discovery Tile. The attacker destroys the Ancients and has surviving Ships in the Sector at the end of the Combat Phase, but fails to destroy all of Draco's Population Cubes, so Draco still Controls the Sector. Page 19's "if you have at least one Ship in a Sector with a Discovery Tile, take the tile" and the rulebook FAQ point in opposite directions.
- RULING
- Control wins over Ship presence. "As the FAQ says: The player controlling the hex takes the Discovery Tile. So in this case it'd be Draco." The designer added that this will be written more explicitly in a future rules update rather than split between the core rules and the FAQ.

- SITUATION
- A player moves Ships into a Sector held by a Diplomatic Relations partner and is pinned there, and the table has to decide whether being pinned is itself the act of aggression that breaks the alliance.
- RULING
- Being pinned is not the trigger. Diplomatic Relations break when, at the end of your Action, you have a Ship in a Sector that contains at least one Ship or Influence Disc belonging to your partner. Passing through such a Sector without ending your Action there is legal — pinning usually forces you to stop, which is why the two are often confused.
