Dune: Imperium — Uprising

Final endgame tiebreaker added by official FAQlinked official sourcepublisher
- RULING
- "In the extremely rare case that the endgame tiebreakers listed in the rulebook aren't enough to resolve a tie, the final tiebreaker is the player who most recently took a Reveal turn." (Marked as new in the Dec 2023 FAQ; not present in the printed rulebook.)
DESIGNER CLARIFICATIONS15
Contracts are mandatory, stackable, and freely orderedlinked official sourcepublisher
- CONTEXT
- Players were uncertain whether completing a contract was optional, whether multiple contracts could be fulfilled at once, and how to order contract effects.
- RULING
- "It is mandatory to complete a contract when you fulfill its conditions. When you have multiple contracts for the same board space, they are all completed in one turn, by sending one Agent to that space. If a contract's condition is sending an Agent to a board space, the contract is another effect of your Agent turn. You may carry out the contract effect in any order with the effects of the board space and the Agent box of the card you played."
Official list of optional vs mandatory effectslinked official sourcepublisher
- CONTEXT
- Uprising introduced new icons (spy placement, shield wall detonation) and the question of which effects are optional caused confusion.
- RULING
- "Most effects from a board space or card you play are mandatory, unless: a card says 'you may' do something; there's an arrow in the effect (if you don't want the effect, you may choose not to pay the cost—except when playing an Intrigue card, where paying a cost is required); you're trashing a card using the 'black X' card icon (but note that it is not optional when a card tells you—without using an arrow—to trash itself)."
Mandatory effects "fizzle" when they cannot be fulfilleddesigner
- CONTEXT
- Players asked whether you can still use a board space or play a card when one of its mandatory effects cannot be fulfilled (e.g., using Imperial Privilege on round 1 when you have no Agent to recall).
- RULING
- "All this was played correctly." [Paul Dennen confirming the following principle, described in the thread]: if you cannot fulfill a mandatory effect, you can still use the board space or play the card — the unfulfillable effect is simply skipped. Exception: you cannot play an Intrigue card purely to discard it for no effect (e.g., to avoid someone stealing it via Secrets).
Reverend Mother Jessica ability usable on the flip turndesignerlinked official source
- CONTEXT
- When Lady Jessica transforms into Reverend Mother Jessica via a Bene Gesserit board space, players were unsure whether her "when you send an Agent" ability could apply to that same turn, since the flip happens after the Agent has already been sent.
- RULING
- "Yes, you can use Reverend Mother ability on the same turn you flip the leader card." (Also stated verbatim in the official FAQ: "You may use her 'Reverend Mother' ability on the same turn you flip to this side of the Leader card.")
Shield Wall destruction is optional and permanentlinked official sourcepublisher
- RULING
- "Destroying the Shield Wall with the Shield Wall icon is optional. Once removed, the Shield Wall is gone for the remainder of the game."
Maker Hooks are not spent when summoning a sandwormlinked official sourcepublisher
- CONTEXT
- The Maker Hook mechanic is new to Uprising and the rulebook was unclear on whether hooks are consumed upon summoning.
- RULING
- "You do not 'spend' your Maker Hooks to summon a sandworm." Maker Hooks are retained after each sandworm is summoned.
Spy recall requires a card play; two spies allowed if different effectslinked official sourcepublisher
- CONTEXT
- The new Spy mechanic in Uprising raised questions about whether recalling a Spy constitutes your Agent turn, and whether two Spies can be recalled in one turn.
- RULING
- "To recall a Spy to Infiltrate or Gather Intelligence, you must still play a card on your Agent turn. You may recall two Spies in one turn if each is used for a different effect. For example: with Spies on Research Station's two observation posts, you can recall one to Infiltrate and one to Gather Intelligence, but not both to Gather Intelligence."
Shaddam Corrino IV: Sardaukar contracts and Emperor ability scopelinked official sourcepublisher
- CONTEXT
- Two of Shaddam's abilities in Uprising generated confusion at setup and during play.
- RULING
- "The 'Sardaukar Commander' gives you the option to acquire a set-aside Sardaukar contract in place of one of the generally available contracts. You do not begin the game with the Sardaukar contracts in your possession. The 'Emperor of the Known Universe' ability affects only the turn in which it is triggered, not the remainder of the round. In a six-player game, it will affect your activated Ally."
Guild Envoy discard is mandatorylinked official sourcepublisher
- RULING
- "You must discard a card when you play this on an Agent turn." The discard is not optional.
Rival gaining Swordmaster first reduces human player cost to 6 Solarilinked official sourcepublisher
- CONTEXT
- Uprising's Rival rules include a Swordmaster acquisition path. The FAQ clarifies the cost reduction when a Rival goes first.
- RULING
- "When playing Uprising, if a Rival is first to gain a Swordmaster, the cost for other (human) players is reduced to 6 Solari."
Countess Ariana Thorvald: Spice Addict is mandatory and does not trigger on zero-spice worm summonslinked official sourcepublisher
- CONTEXT
- In Uprising, it is possible to summon a sandworm from Deep Desert or Habbanya Erg without harvesting any spice (when no bonus spice is present). Players were unsure whether Ariana Thorvald's ability triggered in that case.
- RULING
- "The 'Spice Addict' ability is not optional. It affects only the spice you harvest when sending an Agent to a maker board space, not spice you receive by other means. When playing Uprising, it is possible to harvest no spice from Deep Desert and Hagga Basin (if there is no bonus spice there, and you choose to summon a sandworm rather than take base spice). In such a case, you did not 'harvest spice' (even if you used another card that gives you spice), so the 'Spice Addict' ability does not apply."
Manipulate: opponents cannot acquire the removed card; deadline applieslinked official sourcepublisher
- CONTEXT
- The Manipulate ability (on Helena Richese leader card and an Uprising intrigue card) removes a card from the Imperium Row. Questions arose about whether opponents could acquire it via special means and what happens if you don't buy it.
- RULING
- "Your opponents cannot acquire the card you remove. You may use other means to acquire the card (for example: Bypass Protocol, Boundless Ambition), though the 1 persuasion discount will not apply. If you don't acquire the card by the end of your next Reveal turn, remove it from the game."
Dispatch an Envoy does not remove or duplicate icons on the affected cardlinked official sourcepublisher
- CONTEXT
- Dispatch an Envoy adds Agent icons to a grafted card. It was unclear whether it could remove icons or double an icon already present.
- RULING
- "This card does not remove any icons from the affected card. It also does not add a copy of an icon that a card already has. For example: you graft Slig Farmer to Spice Hunter and play Dispatch an Envoy. One of Spice Hunter's two agent icons is Fremen, so Dispatch an Envoy adds only the other three icons."
Alliance token lost when falling to 3 influence or when a tie is brokenlinked official sourcepublisher
- CONTEXT
- The conditions for losing an Alliance token mid-game were not fully spelled out in the Uprising rulebook.
- RULING
- "If you have an Alliance token and lose Influence with that Faction, you also lose the token in either of these cases: (a) You were previously tied for Influence with another player; the player you were tied with now takes the Alliance token. (If you were tied with more than one other player, choose one to take it.) (b) If you have fallen to 3 Influence or lower. (If no player has 4 Influence or higher to take the Alliance token, return it to the game board.)"
Retreat "any number" of troops includes zerolinked official sourcepublisher
- RULING
- "When a card allows you to retreat 'any number' of troops, you may choose zero." Cards such as Chani and Rapid Mobilization that say "any number" do not require you to retreat at least one troop.
