Mayor redirect onto the Soldier results in no deathcommunity high-engagementlinked official source
- RULING
- If the Demon attacks the Mayor and the Storyteller redirects that death onto the Soldier, nobody dies. This supersedes an earlier BotC Discord ruling that required the Storyteller to redirect onto a player who can actually die; the released Trouble Brewing almanac states the no-death outcome under both the Soldier and the Mayor entries.

Resurrection brings the character back into play freshlinked official sourcecommunity high-engagement
- CONTEXT
- Custom-script builders asked whether a resurrected Sweetheart leaves a second permanently drunk player behind.
- RULING
- "All resurrections, like all swapped characters, are treated as the character going out of play and coming back into play" — so the Sweetheart's existing drunkenness ends when the Sweetheart is resurrected, rather than stacking a second drunk player.

- CONTEXT
- Players disagreed over whether a poisoning Demon such as the Pukka could poison the Soldier and then kill them once the poison stripped their protection.
- RULING
- Trouble Brewing almanac: "In other editions, Demons may have abilities other than killing. The Soldier is also protected from all other harmful effects of the Demon's ability, such as poisoning or turning the Soldier evil."
Drunk or poisoned players still count as having wokenlinked official sourcecommunity high-engagement
- CONTEXT
- A Storyteller asked whether the Chambermaid sees a drunk or poisoned player who was woken for a non-functioning ability.
- RULING
- Almanac: "Players that woke tonight due to their ability but are drunk or poisoned still count as having woke tonight."
A drunk Vigormortis Minion loses their own ability but keeps poisoninglinked official sourcecommunity high-engagement
- CONTEXT
- A Minion kept alive-in-effect by Vigormortis was then made drunk, and the Storyteller was unsure whether the neighbour's poison lifted too.
- RULING
- Almanac: "If a dead Minion becomes drunk or poisoned, they lose their ability until they become sober and healthy again." The poison on the adjacent Townsfolk comes from Vigormortis rather than from the Minion, so it continues regardless of the Minion's drunkenness.
The Sage must be shown the Demon that killed themlinked official sourcecommunity high-engagement
- CONTEXT
- With a dead Fang Gu and a living Demon both in play, a Storyteller asked whether the Sage could be pointed at the dead Demon instead.
- RULING
- Sects & Violets almanac: "If the Sage was killed by the Demon, wake the Sage. Point at two players, one who is the Demon that killed the Sage." The Demon responsible for the kill must be one of the two players shown.
A seemingly dead Zombuul does not count toward the vote thresholdlinked official sourcecommunity high-engagement
- CONTEXT
- With two living players plus a Zombuul on its first "death", the Storyteller needed to know how many votes an execution required.
- RULING
- The Zombuul does not count toward the number of votes required. Bad Moon Rising almanac: "The seemingly dead Zombuul counts as a dead player in almost every way."
The Recluse can register differently to each side of the Chef at oncelinked official sourcecommunity high-engagement
- CONTEXT
- A Recluse seated between two evil players — the Storyteller wanted to know whether the Chef could be shown a "1".
- RULING
- Yes. The almanac allows the Recluse to register as evil to one neighbour and as good to the other within the same resolution of the Chef's ability, so a "1" is a legal result.
The Spy registers as a character but never gains its abilitylinked official sourcecommunity high-engagement
- RULING
- Registering as a character is not the same as being that character. A Spy registering as the Virgin does not execute their nominator, and a Spy registering as the Recluse does not gain the Recluse's own misregistration. By contrast, a Recluse can be killed by the Slayer, because the Slayer's ability asks whether the target is a Demon, not whether the target has a Demon's ability.
Droisoning loops resolve as drunk or poisonedlinked official sourcecommunity high-engagement
- CONTEXT
- Self-referential setups — a Poisoner poisoning themselves, or a Sailor drunking themselves — appear to create an infinite regress.
- RULING
- Official ruling: "If a player becoming drunk/poisoned results in them no longer being drunk/poisoned, they remain drunk/poisoned." A Poisoner who targets themselves stays poisoned.
Q&A16
Vote totals are not roundedcommunity high-engagement
- QUESTION
- With an odd number of living players, is the "half the living players" execution threshold rounded up or down?
- ANSWER
- No rounding is needed. The nominee needs a number of votes equal to or greater than half the living players, so with 9 players alive, 4 votes fails (4 is less than 4.5) and 5 votes succeeds.
AUTHOR: Ctrl_Alt_Defeat (Mike Hughey)SOURCE: boardgamegeek.com(5 replies, 10 thumbs)DATE: 2026-05-13A tie clears the block and nobody is executedcommunity high-engagementlinked official source
- QUESTION
- If player A gets 3 votes, player B gets 4 and is on the block, and player C then also gets 4, does the block revert to A or does it empty?
- ANSWER
- It empties. Once a nominee holds the most votes, only a later nominee with strictly more votes can replace them on the block. A later nominee who merely ties leaves nobody due for execution, and the day ends without one (rulebook p. 15).
Voting order, and what happens when nobody nominatescommunity high-engagementlinked official source
- QUESTION
- If discussion time runs out and the Storyteller calls for a vote, who votes first when there is no nominee?
- ANSWER
- The situation does not arise. Voting always begins with the first player seated clockwise from the nominee who still has a vote, so a vote only ever happens after a nomination. If nobody is nominated in reasonable time, the Storyteller closes nominations and the day ends without an execution.
When the Butler may legally raise their handcommunity high-engagement
- QUESTION
- The Butler is seated before their Master. Both raise hands, the Butler's vote is counted, then the Master lowers their hand before being counted. Is the Butler's vote valid?
- ANSWER
- Yes. The Butler may vote as long as the Master's hand is raised at the moment the Butler's vote is counted, or the Master's vote has already been counted. Once the Butler's vote is counted, what the Master does afterwards does not affect it.
A Butler who votes without their Mastercommunity high-engagementlinked official source
- QUESTION
- The Butler is seated before their Master and raises a hand without knowing whether the Master will vote. What should the Storyteller do?
- ANSWER
- Count the vote as normal. A Butler who votes knowing their Master is not voting is cheating in the same way as opening their eyes at night, and the Storyteller handles it out of game by speaking to the player afterwards rather than by voiding the vote.
Player counts above 15 use Travelers, not extra Townsfolkcommunity high-engagementlinked official source
- QUESTION
- With 16 players, can the Storyteller simply add a 16th Townsfolk instead of a Traveler?
- ANSWER
- No. The setup tops out at 15 non-Traveler characters; players beyond that are Travelers, even if they are present for the whole game. Adding Townsfolk past 15 would leave too few not-in-play characters for the Demon's bluffs. Travelers also bring their own rules — exile and execution are separate and can both happen in one day, and all players including the dead may vote on an exile, which needs a simple majority.
Poison ends the moment the Poisoner diescommunity high-engagement
- QUESTION
- The Demon kills the Poisoner after the Poisoner has already poisoned the Fortune Teller. Is the Fortune Teller still poisoned for the rest of that night?
- ANSWER
- No. Unless a character's token says otherwise, an ability's ongoing effect ends as soon as its owner dies, so the Fortune Teller becomes sober and healthy immediately and receives true information when they wake later that same night.
Why the evil win condition is worded so broadlycommunity high-engagement
- QUESTION
- Why do the rules say evil wins when two players are alive rather than simply saying the Demon must survive?
- ANSWER
- Evil wins when there are two or fewer living players and good has not already won; good wins when no Demon is alive. The broader wording exists because abilities such as the Mastermind and the Evil Twin can carry a game past the Demon's death or hand evil a win without a living Demon.
How to deliver the Librarian's informationcommunity high-engagement
- QUESTION
- Does the Storyteller tell the Librarian which of the two players is the Outsider, and how is the second player chosen?
- ANSWER
- The Storyteller picks one Outsider character that is in play, points at two players — one of whom is that Outsider — and shows the Librarian that character's token. Which player is the decoy is entirely the Storyteller's choice and may be a Townsfolk, Minion or Demon. If no Outsider is in play, the Librarian is shown a "0".
Evil Travelers are not Minionscommunity high-engagementlinked official source
- QUESTION
- Does an evil Traveler count as a Minion for abilities that reference Minions?
- ANSWER
- No. A Traveler remains a Traveler regardless of alignment or ability — the Apprentice has a Minion ability but is still a Traveler. The rulebook (p. 25) does let the Storyteller decide whether a Traveler becomes a non-Traveler, which is a separate, explicit decision.
Every new Demon learns who the Lunatic iscommunity high-engagementlinked official source
- QUESTION
- After a star-pass creates a new Imp, does that player learn who the Lunatic is?
- ANSWER
- Yes. The Lunatic's ability says the Demon knows who they are and who they choose at night, which applies every night the Lunatic's ability is active, whichever player is the Demon that night. The Lunatic's "How to Run" entry assumes this.
A dead Lunatic is never wokencommunity high-engagement
- QUESTION
- Can the Storyteller keep waking a Lunatic after they die, to preserve the illusion that they are the Demon?
- ANSWER
- No. The Lunatic loses their ability on death and their token does not say "even when dead", so they are not woken again. The drunk Ravenkeeper is not a counter-example; it is an exception the almanac handles explicitly.
Slayer kills the Imp while the Scarlet Woman is in playcommunity high-engagement
- QUESTION
- With 5 or more players alive, the Slayer shoots the Imp during the day. What does the Storyteller announce, and when does the Scarlet Woman find out?
- ANSWER
- The Storyteller announces publicly that the shot player has died and that the game continues. The Scarlet Woman becomes the Imp immediately, but is not told until the coming night, when they are woken in the Scarlet Woman's night-order slot, informed they are now the Imp, and then kill in the Imp's slot.
The Fang Gu's Outsider jump happens once per game, evercommunity high-engagement
- QUESTION
- If a second player becomes the Fang Gu, can that new Fang Gu also convert an Outsider?
- ANSWER
- No. The Fang Gu transfer can only ever occur once per game, no matter how many players hold the Fang Gu character over the course of it. It is the exception to the usual rule that a player becoming a new character gains that ability afresh.
Night deaths are not shown until dawncommunity high-engagement
- QUESTION
- When a player dies at night, should their Town Square life token be flipped straight away so later characters such as the Professor can act on it?
- ANSWER
- No. Life tokens stay unflipped until dawn; the Storyteller notes the death only in the Grimoire. The Professor must therefore choose without knowing who died that night. If a player dies and is resurrected during the same night, no death is announced at dawn at all.
The Investigator can be shown the Spy as a Minioncommunity high-engagement
- QUESTION
- With both the Spy and the Investigator in play and neither drunk, can the Investigator's information point at the Spy?
- ANSWER
- Yes. The Spy *might* register as good, not *always*, so the Storyteller may have the Spy register as a Minion — including as the Spy — for the Investigator's ability.
EDGE CASES4
Gunslinger shot resolves before the executioncommunity high-engagement
- SITUATION
- The Demon has been voted for execution, and during that same vote the Gunslinger shoots and kills a good player.
- RULING
- The Gunslinger's shot resolves in the window between the vote finishing and the execution taking place. If that death leaves only two living players (not counting Travelers), the game ends immediately with evil winning and the execution never happens.
AUTHOR: OzarkSavage (Benjamin Coles)SOURCE: boardgamegeek.com(10 replies, 11 thumbs)DATE: 2023-01-21The Storyteller may answer "I don't know" to the Artistcommunity high-engagement
- SITUATION
- An Artist poses a question engineered as a logic puzzle, intended to extract reliable information even in a Vortox game.
- RULING
- "I don't know" is a legitimate Storyteller answer to the Artist. A Storyteller faced with a question they cannot quickly and correctly resolve may answer that way, and may tell the Artist so and let them rephrase first.
Obviously false information to a drunk or poisoned player is legalcommunity high-engagementlinked official source
- SITUATION
- The Storyteller wants to signal to a drunk or poisoned player that their information cannot be trusted — for example, telling the Empath a number that is impossible for their seating.
- RULING
- It is legal. A drunk or poisoned player has no ability, so the Storyteller may give them any information at all, and the rulebook's nitty-gritty section establishes that anything the rules do not forbid is allowed. Whether it is a good idea is a separate, balance-driven judgement.
"Dies, then becomes healthy" matters even for a dead playercommunity high-engagement
- SITUATION
- The Pukka's wording has a poisoned player die and only then become healthy, which looks pointless once the player is dead.
- RULING
- The ordering matters because the death may not stick. If the death is prevented by a protecting character such as the Innkeeper, Sailor or Tea Lady, the player is left alive and healthy rather than alive and poisoned; and characters that return players to life or act after death — the Professor, Shabaloth, Bone Collector, Moonchild — need the poison already cleared.
